ABOUT
PAIK HYANG RAN
Artist Profile
Paik Hyang Ran (백향란) is a Korean painter whose work explores the human pursuit of freedom, hope, and possibilities beyond one's given condition.
Working in traditional Korean color painting, she has developed a distinctive visual language of birds, trees, the sea, and distant islands over more than three decades.

Artist Statement
For many years, I have painted beings moving toward somewhere beyond themselves.
In my earlier works, flowers, paper, and other objects emerged from enclosed forms such as chimneys, tubes, and musical instruments. Over time, these forms became birds, rising from trees and flying across the sea toward distant islands.
For me, the island is not a physical destination. It represents longing, hope, and an ideal. Yet I am not interested in depicting the moment of arrival. Arrival marks an end. What matters is the journey itself—the effort to keep moving toward something not yet reached. I believe this is what life is.
The recurring image of a tree longing to become a bird reflects another important idea in my work. A tree is rooted in one place, unable to move freely. Its desire to become a bird is not simply an escape from confinement, but the possibility of becoming something beyond what it already is.
As my work has evolved, my attention has gradually turned inward. The energy of outward movement has given way to questions of the self, contemplation, and increasingly simplified forms.
I do not wish to confine my paintings to a fixed meaning or established form. Just as I seek freedom in life, I want my work to remain open to change and possibility.
For me, hope is not a completed world waiting at the end of a journey. It is the possibility of continuing to move toward what has not yet been reached.
